how do i open it?!?
and also, am i going mad or did my revision list use to say ‘compound interest’ and now it doesnt!
:S
Put your cursor over the bold bit – those words are the link. Just click on it.
Compound interest is needed.
Just to check… Compound interest is when a bank says if you put £1000 in their bank they will give you 3% interest every year for 3 years. Then what do you do? 0.03^3 x 1000 or something else??
Hi Pia,
Not quite.
If your original amount is 100%, then after interest you’ll have 103% which is 1.03 as a decimal.
Your sum is therefore £1000 x (1.03)^3.
OK?
JT
OK, so if you had £2300 and 6 percent interest for 5 years you would do £2300 x(1.06)^5… Thankyou
Have just forgotton how to solve inequalities over a number line- how do you do it again?
Hi Ella,
Say the inequality is 3x + 5 < 11
then 3x must be <6
so x<2
On the number line, draw an open circle at 2 and a line to the left to show the less than bit. Open circle as there’s no = in the inequality.

I have forgotten how you work the VAT on a amount of money, how do you do it?
Hi Joanna,
If the VAT is 17.5%, you find 17.5/100ths of the original amount and add it on, or, since 100% + 17.5% = 117.5% = 1.175, you can multiply the original amount by 1.175.

hello, i wasnt sure where to post this but i was just posting to say yesterday at the maths thing was good. It was all about decisions in maths and we got to see the origional Leon bridge puzzle thing. We also did things on mazes and networks – we got biscuits and squash too!
(small things make me happy!) it was really good and arianna came amazingly prepared!
Nina
Hi Nina,
Glad you had a great time. We do Decision Maths as one of the A level modules – in fact the paper was last Friday! Always an enjoyable course. See you there in a few year’s time??
JT
PS We don’t do squash as we prefer tea with our biscuits
You probably will see me theer in a few years time!
It was very good and there was a maze in the shape of an elephant which was the highlight of the day!
Tea is good for me – the squash was a bit strong!

did mr b create the blog – if he did i think he may have a secert passion for gardening – all the pictures on the blog are of flowers/trees/raspberries!
Nina
Lol! I’ve never heard him talk about gardening but, you never know! Why don’t you ask him?
i defo will!
Please can someone help me with the maths homework!
What do you have to do?
um, q4 page 259
we did a in class, but i dont get the rest! :’(
I am very sorry, but i cannot do Q4 of the maths homework. I have done Q5 – but i do not understand how to work out Q4 at all!
I have left a note on the maths blog, but nobody has been online and no-one seems to be onine/have their phone on so no-one could explain it to me!
Nina
Pina… did we have to do q6… I’m stuck on 4 too :’(
no we didnt, just Q4 + 5! only….
Sorry -can’t for the life of me find my 9A book here at home! Don’t worry – noted that you’ve tried it. We’ll go over it tomorrow, or come and find me.

Hi Nina,
You need to keep substituting in the values from the graph and then solve what’s left of the equation.
Equation is
h = at^2 + bt + c
Part (a) from graph, when t=0, h=0 as well. Put 0 into the eqn for t and h and you’ll get 0=c, therefore c=0
This means equation only has 2 terms because you can drop c.
When t=5 on graph, h=0 again. Plug that into the equation. That will give you an equation that you can’t solve because it has both a and b in it.
Do the same with t=1 now, getting the h value off the graph.
Now you’ll have a pair of simultaneous equations which you can solve to get a and b.
Have fun
JT (the reliable one!!)
to me that just sounds like gobbldy goop! :S
I know that about 1,000,000 people are stuck on this homework, so it looks like we will spend a long time on it tomorrow….
Thank you anyway, Mrs Tibble!
WHY DO I ALWAYS HAVE A REALLY UGLY PENTAGON! I AM ALSO NOT ALWAYS UNHAPPY!
<– SEE!
