    Hey Miss Tibble

  • Rachel

Mrs Tibble, I’ve set up the cipher for my sister but could you give me some directions on the Simon Singh website so I can get to the replacement bit…or is it shifting the letters along?

    Thanks!

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
It’s all in the Black Chamber(?) section. I’ll go over and have a quick look.

    Hi Mrs Tibble,

Thanks! We did it and my sister LOVED it! She can’t wait for two weeks time, although I have warned her I don’t think it will be alphabet shift again!

We are still waiting for feedback but I have signed her up with a team name of SydenhamJuniorCrackers…(I was tired and it was the best thing I could think of!)

    Hi Mrs Tibble,

Sorry I couldn’t come tonight. We had to get to the dentist for my sister!

    How did it go?

    Was it another alphabet shift?

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
Katja worked it out in period 5 so I don’t know. Think it was substitution. Try it out with Rebecca. We’ve got our cert now for last week – equal first :-) Has Rebecca seen hers? Entries are up by about 200 on last year!!
    Have fun.
How did you get on with the number work questions?
    Mrs T

  • Rachel

    Hi Mrs T,

We’ve finished it now…part a one was …………. but part b was ……………………………..! Yes, I showed Rebecca we were joint first…she was particularly happy!

How do we get the certificate? Do we download it or is it sent?

Also, do you get points deducted if you accidently missed out a space in the cracked code. We just realised we left IWILL instead of I WILL…will we lose points for this??

I got on OK with the number questions…haven’t finished it yet though but so far there is only one I am stuck on I think :)

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,

If you go to the Get Feedback section, there’s a link which says something like collect your certificate here. You get one each week once the last time zone is finished. Then you get a final one when it’s all over.
It won’t matter about the iwill but you can submit more than one attempt if you’re worried about it.
I have edited out what you said because you shouldn’t really put the solutions into the public domain!!
    JT

  • Rachel

Oops! Sorry! I forgot anyone could access this site!
OK, we’ll print it off tomorrow at school and probably submit it again!

    Thanks :)

  • Mrs Tibble

You need to do it before 1pm tomorrow for challenge B to get max points.

  • Rachel

Oh we’ve done it already :) I meant just print off the certificate :)

  • Rachel

Mrs Tibble! Disaster!!! I did part B last night by 8ish and then the internet went until this morning due to bad weather in Madeira and so I’ve had to submit it this morning which means I didn’t get maximum points :( so annoyed!!!

  • Mrs Tibble

Oh no Rachel, that’s rotten luck! You’ll just have to tell your parents they aren’t allowed to take you to Madeira anymore lol! By the way, it’s sunny here ;-)

I wasn’t worried about you either as I saw your team name on the list so knew you’d managed to get online. It was our lot who were worrying me but they did eventually turn up and submitted on time. What did your sister make of the codes? Is she enjoying doing this? There isn’t one next week as everyone is on half term.

Enjoy the rest of your hol.

    hey Mrs T,
i was wondering for the surds test how you would do this question:

    ( 2 square root 5 +7 ) + ( 2 square root 5 -7 )

    thanks,

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
Should that be x between the brackets?
ie is this the product of 2 brackets.

The format is the brackets for the difference of two squares (a+b)(a-b)
so the answer is a-squared minus b-squared.
So square the first term, square the second term and put a minus sign between them.

  • maddy wyburd

hello mrs T, i have done the maths homework, but i really dont understand the surds still, and i dont think i have done it right at all :/ can i come at a lunch time and go through it again? thanks

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Maddy,
Course you can – although I’d prefer after school. Is Tuesday any good?
    Mrs T
PS Let me mark what you’ve done first so that I can see exactly what the problem is.

  • Frances M

    hey Mrs T,
on the trig maths hwk im not sure what to do when the question is:
    what angles have sines of:
    D) 0.666666666666666…
i.e im not sure how many 6′s to put into the calculator??
    thanks

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
Just fill your screen – that’ll be fine
    or do 2/3 instead.
    JT

  • Frances M

    OK thanks…

  • Frances M

    hey Mrs,
I’ve been working on simultaneous equations and I understand it but I don’t understand how you do this question:

    7x – 6y = 17
    2x + 3y = 19

    thanks

  • Frances M

    and also this question:

    6x + 2y = 2
    5x – 7y = 6

    sorry thank youuu

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
In the first one, double everything in the 2nd equation, then your y terms will both be 6y; opposite signs so add the equations to eliminate y.
In the 2nd one, multiply 1st equation by 7 and 2nd equation by 2 and proceed as in the first one.
    OK?
    JT

  • Frances M

the questions were from a bitesize test and the multiple choice answers dont match the answer i got when i did the first equation. ?????
I understand the second question but not the first one??

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
    Answer is x=5, y=3
When you multiplied the 2nd equation, did you remember to double the right hand side as well?
    JT

  • Frances M

yayayayay!!! i got it…no I just did some really weird thingss…
    haha
    thanks

  • Frances M

do we need to know about areas and volumes of similar figures and in the rev guide it has @3 figure bearings’. what is this??

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
Area and volume – yes; it’s where you have to remember to square and cube the scale factor.
3 figure bearings is just the full title for bearings. They are always written with 3 digits so if, for example, the bearing was an angle of 60 deg, you would write it as 060 degrees.
Hope that helps. Sounds like you’re working hard in the run up to Christmas!
    Have fun,
    JT

  • Georgia

Hi ms Tibble, where is the answer paper for the maths paper u gave to us on the last day?

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Georgia,
I don’t have one here. Have e-mailed the men to see if they can put one on the blog for you.
Hope you are having a good Christmas.
    JT

  • Rachel

    Hi Mrs T,

    Hope you’re having a good Christmas :)

I’m just skimming over the relatively easy stuff and I was wondering what we have to know about error and percentage error because I can’t find it in my books…in my year 9 book I have percentage change, income tax and sale prices so maybe I missed that lesson?

But I looked on Google and it said something about the percentage error is:

difference between rounded and unrounded number / unrounded number x 100????

    Thanks :)

  • Rachel

Also what does it mean by compound measures??

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,

Compound measures are things you have to calculate because they can’t be measured directly. The two on your syllabus are:
    speed = distance/time
    density = mass/volume

Error = difference between measured value and true value.

How significant that error is depends on how it compares with the true/total value.

eg if I have 2p in my pocket and I drop 1p, that’s half or 50% of my money.
if I have £1 in my pocket and drop 1p, that’s 1/100 of my money or 1%

    Hope that helps.
    Have fun,
    JT
