Here are a selection of the best photos entered for the photo competition. There were literally hundreds of entries, and the selection procress was really difficult – but well done to the winners: Grace, Hannah and Jemima! Thanks also to Chas Norman Cameras in Beckenham for providing the prizes. The winning entries will be used on the blog banners very soon!

Cipher Challenge 2009

If you have signed up for the Cipher Challenge, please will you check your school e-mails. There should be a message there from me. Let me know if it isn’t there and we can check the access. While the challenge is happening this term, all communication will be via your school e-mail, so you will need to check it daily.

My message gives you the details of the group e-mail account and the access arrangements for the Cipher Challenge website.

I have done a Cipher Challenge notice board by the lockers in C7 where there is info about different types of code. I have also got cipher wheels for each of you, which you can have on Thursday.

A brilliant programme looking at Godel’s theorems, which proved once and for all that Mathematics would never be able to exist without paradoxes – results which shocked the academic world to its core.

Tetris is a lot more Mathematical than you might think. The shapes used in the game are all the possibile permutations of 4 square blocks, and the most efficient way of ‘packing’ blocks like is something Mathematicians have to deal with in industry.
