    Hello!

  • Tandi

hi sir, i dont understand question 4 of today’s homework (page 411) is the graph going to be a quadratic?

  • Mrs Tibble

    Tandi,
It can’t be a quadratic because it doesn’t have x^2. However, it will be a curve. Work out the missing value from the table and plot the points to get the curve. Then use your graph to answer the question.

    Hi Sir,

I’m not too sure about what the homework is…I wrote down Pg 83 qu 1,3 but there is two exercises on that page. Which exercise do I do? :)

  • Mr Brewin

It’s the lower one… the one where you have to plot the quadratics after filling in the tables?

Hi sir uhm i may have left my homework book in my school :/

  • Hannah

i meant in my locker at school

  • Rosie

Hi I am really confused on this homework
    it’s 17E question 1

the table of values says that when x is -3 y=2x is 0.1, when I use my calculator I get -6. I am using brackets so is the book wrong?

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rosie,
You’ve misread the equation. It’s not 2 times x, it’s 2 to the power of x. You need to use the power button on your calculator.
2 to the power of -3 means 1 over 2-cubed which is 1/8 or 0.125.
They’ve rounded to 1 dp – even though they said they’ve done it to 2 dp lol
    Does that help?

  • Rosie

    ah yes thank you!

  • Becky

Hi Sir, I am a bit stick on part c of question 2 (ex25A). I’m not sure what the question is asking and i’m not sure what a column vector is?

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Becky,

Do you remember doing translation vectors in year 8 when you counted how many units the shape had been moved horizontally, and how many vertically? You then wrote the numbers in a column in brackets, x first, y second. That’s called a column vector.

In question 1, vector a would be 1 over 2 (no divide line though) in brackets (look at how they’ve done it in Q3 as I can’t type it!!)
    Hope that helps.

    Mrs T

  • Becky

Aaaah…i see. Thankyou! I didn’t realise that they were called column vectors :)

  • Asha

Hi sir, i’m a bit confussed about ques 4b(ex25A) am i supposed to draw the diagram and then add the lines that they give? Or use the lines they give to draw a new triangle? Or not do any of that and do something different??

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Asha,
do exactly what it says in the question: copy out the diagram (as that defines vectors a
and b for you, then work out where 2a’s and 1b will take you to (from 0) and that will be point X. Same for point Y but this time it’s 2 b’s and 1a to get you there.
    Hope that helps.
    Mrs T

  • Asha

Yes thank you Mrs Tibble it helped alot. I think i’ve done it now :)

  • Becky

    Hi Mr Brewin,

In the school revision guide it says that a more detailed revision list is available to download from the mathematics department web site. Where can i find that? thank you :)

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Becky,
Are you really asking what you need to revise 2 days before the exam?!! Answer: everything. I’ll e-mail a topics list to you at your school e-mail address.
    Have a fun weekend 8-)
    Mrs T

  • Becky

    Hi Mrs Tibble,
Yes it sounds silly, i only just realized that there is a more detailed version available. :P Thank you so much!! I am doing exercises on the Maths watch CD at the moment :) Thank you, you too

  • Becky

one quick question…where can i find the answers to the HW maths book? :)

  • Mrs Tibble

    Becky,
I have them here at home if you want some, but they aren’t online I’m afraid: I only have hard copy.
    JT

  • Becky

    Hi Mrs Tibble
Um yes would i be able to borrow the answers tomorrow so i can check the questions i have done? :) x

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Becky,
They live in my bag so no probs. Is it a specific exercise? I could type it out or scan it and e-mail it over if you need it now.

  • Becky

    Hello,

Ahhh brilliant thank you ha ha :) Um no it is a mixture of exercises so i will get it off you tomorrow…thank you anyway.I hope you have had a good weekend. :) Can i just check two answers just to know if i am on the right track…is the answer to Ex5B question40… 12h(cubed)+ 15h(squared)g? and is the answer to EX 12A Que30…3K-15-K(squared)+5K? Thank you :) x

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Becky,

Spot on – we’ll make an A level mathematician out of you yet 8-)

Just one point with the last one: you should simplify the 2 k-terms so that your final answer is 8k – 15 – k^2 (the little hat means power)

Hope the paper goes really well tomorrow,
    JT

  • Becky

    Hello Mrs Tibble,

Aaaahh Phew thank you and oh yes I understand :) Yes I am looking forward to A-Level,and I hope the paper goes really well tomorrow too. Thank you Mrs Tibble and I will see you tomorrow!!! :D x

  • Becky

So sorry Mrs Tibble…one quick question :P Will they give us the re arranged cosine rule on the paper or do we have to remember it? :)

  • Rachel

Soooooooo…our Maths GCSE is tomorrow. :| ahhhh!
Ok Mrs Tibble, in the morning, do you have any free periods in which I could come, maybe with a few friends, to go over some stuff, such as simultaneous equations which still drive me insane!? It’s not urgent, I just think that you explain things in a way I understand and remember better than my scrappy notes :P Thanks :)

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Becky,
You need to be able to rearrange the cosine rule yourself.
    Mrs T

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
In theory the maths dept is free all morning but we will be used for cover for school exams and won’t know the details till tomorrow am. Cover shouldn’t be heavy though so I should be able to help you at some point. Lurk around the form rooms as these won’t be occupied by exam classes.
    JT

  • Rachel

Oh and also, are there only the three past papers on pupilshare, i.e. may 09, nov 09 and june 10? If you have any more (even if we’ve done them in class) could you email me a non-calculator paper which I can have a go at early tomorrow morning? Thank you!

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
Sent you 2 to school address.
    JT

  • Becky

Thank you Mrs Tibble :) oh and Rachel can you send those to me please :) x

  • Mrs Tibble

    I’ll do it.
    JT

  • Becky

Thank you Mrs Tibble…you are brilliant!!! :D x

  • Rachel

    Thank you Mrs Tibble :)

  • Mrs Tibble

You’re welcome ladies. Is it safe to go afk and make a cuppa now?

  • Rachel

Hahahahaha! Umm…what mark did you have to get to get an A* in the November 2008 paper? I just did it now and got 88…the last question killed me :(

  • Rachel

    Hi Mrs T,

Did you manage to have a look at the paper???

  • Mrs Tibble

    HI Rachel,
Don’t know – usually around 83-85, so well done.
What did you think of today’s paper?
    Mrs T

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
Just seen your message; having a look now. It was quite nasty at the end I thought. How about you?
    JT

  • Rachel

It was HORRENDOUS. So much harder than any of the past papers, I cried so much during and after the exam :’( I revised so much and was so prepared, I did three past papers yesterday getting all A*s and ahhhhh. I’ll be lucky to get a B in that paper :’( sorry to dump my depression on you :P

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Rachel,
Think you might surprise yourself. I think that was hard for everyone not just you, so I shouldn’t worry too much about it. Let’s see what the second paper brings. Mr W will put an analysis on the blog tomorrow.
If it’s any consolation, we all thought it was hard too: much more A* stuff at the back end of the paper. That cone/hemisphere question was evil – when I first saw it I thought it was like the one we looked at this morning but it was much harder because it was area.
Oh well, over now so focus on Friday.
    Mrs T

  • Rachel

I know! The only hardish thing I got was the simultaneous equations…and they weren’t even worth that much :( I hope the grade boundaries are about 50% for an A*..then I might actually stand a chance of getting one! :P Okiedokie, have history tomorrow so revising for that tonight but then will be revising maths until I know everything to counterbalance today’s! :P

  • Mrs Tibble

Lol. Practise on some new syllabus papers – they are REALLY HARD!

  • Rachel

Nooooooooooooooo I can’t deal with any more hard maths papers :(

  • Frances M

Hi mrs T. Yeah i found it really hard too :( the last question was soo difficult i spent ages trying to think how to start and had no clue :( anywayss was just wondering could you post a link to the new syllabus papers place?? thank you

  • Mrs Tibble

    Hi Frances,
You’d actually be better off practising on the old higher papers from when there used to be higher, intermediate and foundation. The higher paper then only had the B & A grade stuff on it. I’ll put some up for you.
    Mrs T

  • Frances M

Thank you and also has Mr williams put up what could be in the calc paper yet?

  • Mrs Tibble

He had to go somewhere after school so he’ll do it when he gets back. Keep an eye out later on this evening. Some of the stuff is fairly obvious – like all the trig. After Monday’s paper, I would fear the worst too so make sure you know how to use (and rearrange) the Cos rule, the sine rule, area of triangle. Transformation of functions hasn’t come up yet either. These should keep you occupied this evening!
Have fun and shout out if you need any help.
    Mrs T
