HI
Hi, Just wanted to say that I have logged on to the blog.
Solape.
hi
helllloooo
SORRY,I DIDNT REALISE I HAD DONE THAT…..
Hi
Hello
sorry, got my email wrong
Hello!!
HELLO
hello
Hi Mr. Brewin. I just had a question- I still don’t completely understand how, if you have 2 negative numbers and you multiply them, you will get a positive number. Thanks!
Hi Hannah,
Let’s do -2 x -5 as an example.
Imagine the -5 is a note in your purse which says I owe Dad 5 dollars ie it represents a debt. Let’s say there’s another one saying I owe Mum 5 dollars. Altogether then you are in debt to the tune of 10 dollars.
If I now come along and take away (-) those two debts, you have effectively gained 10 dollars because you no longer have the debt. So -2x-5=10
In terms of directed numbers:
-2 x -5 means take away 2 lots of -5
ie -(-5) – (-5)
which is +5 + 5 = 10
Does that help?
JT
I think I’m starting to understand it more. But I still don’t understand why, if you were doing -2x-3 for example, if someone gave you $10 to pay off your debt, you would get positive ten instead of zero.
hello
The $10 dollar debt is like a hole in your purse which is going to swallow up the next $10 dollars that comes your way. In order to restore your purse, you need to get rid of the hole by gaining $10. ie if two debts of $5 are taken away, the hole has gone and you are effectively 10 dollars better off because you don’t owe anyone anything anymore.
Hi I was starting to get confused on how to expand the bracket when 3(-7+2)
Thanks
Hi Sinead,
When you expand the bracket, you multiply everything inside it by what is outside, so you get 3 lots of (-7) + 3 lots of 2. Work out those values then tidy it up to one final answer.
hi,whats expanding brackets?
Thanks!
Hi
-25 divided by 5
would it be a negative number
Holly
Can anybody help me with 7
:s
Hey Lois, expanding brackets is multiplying them out.
So, for example: 2(3 + 5) is the same as 2 x 3 + 2 x 5 = 6 + 10 = 16
Does that help?
Holly, -25 divided by 5 would be negative, yes. So do 25 divided by 5 and then add the negative.
That OK?
I do not understand question 7.
Can you help me please!
Not got text book at home… Sorry. Can you outline it here?
Ok, what is evaluating brackets??
Hi
Is evaluating brackets when you do the brackets first on number 7?
don’t worry have looked at previous comment with same question and answer!
Ellie
hi
i was a little confuse on number 4a page 5
because it says multiply the term number by 2 and subtract 1.
Yeah same here. It doesn’t tell u the first term so you don’t know where to start. Do we just put ‘n’ a our first term?
Holly
Shall i just make up the first term
Ellie and Holly,
What is the term number for the first term?!!!
Follow the rule in the green box, and you’ll have the first term.
What is the term number for the 2nd term?
etc
ok thanks
Thanks
