Anastasia,
Yes, that’s right. Subtract the powers because you are dividing, and it’s the first power minus the second. As it’s an exercise on negative powers, does that give you a clue? lol
Yes it does lol also the last one q40. its 2 to the power of a divided 2 to the power b & me and my mum are a bit confuzzled…lol
&&& would the answer be;
2 to the power of ab???
Can we use calculators for the current homework and the one I had to catch up on?
Hi Anastasia,
Stop giving your mum a hard time lol!!!
What is the rule for the powers when you are dividing?
Is that what ab means?
JT
Erin,
Is it the N or the O you aren’t getting?
You could have done them all while you were asking unhelpful questions on here!!!
Using a calculator might get you an answer but it will be a decimal, not a fraction, and it won’t help you understand what is going on in these questions, and this sort of question is ALWAYS on a non-calculator paper so you’ll be clueless in the exam! It’s an exercise on understanding negative powers not pushing buttons so JUST DO IT!
sorry
would Q31 be 5 to the power of minus2?
if there isnt a power on the number then do we just take the other number away from nothing to get a minus?
e.g q32 3 divided by 3 to the power of 4
do i take 4 away from 0 to get -4?
Do we have to show our working like the cancelling fractiony thingy?
Erin,
Q31 correct
An invisible power is a 1 not a 0, so a 3 on its own is a 3 to the power 1.
Alice – only if it helps.
You don’t need to show cancelling, just do the subtraction or addition.
i am stuck on q 40, how do we take a away from b?
Shouldn’t it be the other way round?
Just write it as a sum like you did in the first example in class.
no, i mean like the powers are a and b!
Ok thank you
Sorry how do we set it out? I didn’t copy down the example in class :S
Yes Erin, like I know! Like I have the book and like I can see it. What do you like do with the powers? So write it down! The only thing you can’t like do is work out the answer cos you don’t like know the values.
Alice,
eg Q31
5 to the power 2 divided by 5 to the power 4 = 5 to the power -2 (only in numbers not words!)
Alice – why didn’t you copy down the example? The whole point of doing that is so you have something to refer to when you’re stuck!!!!
I don’t know but i really don’t get it
i dont know what to do with the powers
No i think i know how to do q 31 etc but i don’t get the first lot
Erin, since you are dividing, SUBTRACT them!
a take away b is a-b
Alice,
Do you mean 1-20?
There’s a worked example in the box at the top of the page for those who don’t do as they are told in lessons!
Start with the question, rewrite it as a fraction without the negative power, then work out the denominator value.
oh thankyou
What’s with the bit at the bottom of the example then?
errr…… 5 x 5 = 25
OH! durrrrr
So is the first answer 1/4?
And is it always one as the numerator?
Alice,
Yes 1/4
and yes for these questions.
Hello Mrs Tibble i am trying do the maths home work, but i am stuck on questions 21-30
please can you help me!!
Charlotte, that’s probably because we haven’t done the work for them yet, and they weren’t set as part of the homework.
SLILIY ME i am sorry
Hi Mrs Tibble,
I am doing the h/w and
have realized that i have don’t
have any examples so i don’t really
remeber what to do. Could you tell
me what to do please!
SSOO SORRY!!
Ella,
Look at the box above Q1-20 – there’s a worked example there. Set them out in the same way as that.
Q31-40 are like the ones we have been doing in the lessons. Add the powers when you are multiplying, and subtract the powers when you are dividing.
Thank you so much it’s clear as volvic water!
Hi With the questions I am not sure if this is right but it is for q10) & basically it says 333 so I have done all the stuff for it but I don’t think this is right but is the last # 37 by its self?? WB
&&&&&&& With q11) 2048= 2 to the power of 11 do I need to times anything cause there is no other # in the treee….??
Hi,
i can’t find my maths book can
you give me the questons
Ella
p.s. SSSSOOOO SSOORRYY
Ella, you had it in today’s lesson – how can you possibly have lost it?!!
Plus, you were told to write the homework in your planner so how come you didn’t?
Page 4 numbers 2, 3, 6.

Hello
I wasn’t in the lesson today as you know and is the homework in the blue book or the level up one?
Ok doesn’t matter i got it off Emily
no i mean’t my h/w text book!
sorry i did not make it clear!
That’s OK then as you could get it today! What was the panic about?
